The Original

For many producers and traders of organic products, sustainability and ecological responsibility are part of the company profile. They also want to make this approach clear in the packaging of their products. Das grüne Etikett® now offers an environmentally friendly way of labelling.

Of course, the market already offers a few organic labels. But take a closer look as decision-makers! There are only a few printing processes in the printing industry that can really print with food-safe inks. And when it comes to small or medium runs, it becomes particularly difficult. In general, only digital printing is considered to keep costs down, but the ecological aspect is usually not feasible.

For this reason, Mail Druck + Medien GmbH converted its production line in 2009 and launched a completely new brand, Das grüne Etikett® initially with the biodegradable and compostable film in white and transparent. Today, the selection of materials includes different varieties and thus offers a very good selection for the most diverse products.

For our product Das grüne Etikett®, only label materials made of renewable raw materials are used, also for film labels! All printing inks are food safe, without mineral oil, solvents and additives. Our adhesives are vegan and partly completely biodegradable. Despite these environmentally friendly advantages, printability and utility are not restricted.

Our production runs completely digital. No use of plastic clichés or chemically developed printing plates. This not only saves environmentally harmful materials but also costs.

We're the original - Das grüne Etikett®

We love GREEN

For Mail Druck + Medien GmbH, sustainability is an important aspect in all areas of the packaging and the entire supply chain. In practice, this means assessing the four most important stages in the supply chain and understanding the implications.

So we have to think:

  • Where do our raw materials come from?
  • How are they used in our products?
  • How can we improve the function of packaging?
  • What can we do with the materials after use?

In the manufacture of self-adhesive roll labels, we pay attention to optimising the sustainability of all raw materials used and to reducing environmental impact while maintaining their functional properties.

In contrast to the use of paper, the use of foils for self-adhesive roll labels is not so easy from an environmental point of view. A lot of energy and oil is used in film production and the subsequent disposal of this durable material is not as easy as with paper. Our commitment therefore applied to a film made of renewable raw materials that fulfils all components of the functional properties and corresponds to our environmental philosophy.
Our organic foil is available in white and transparent.

For many producers and traders of organic products, sustainability and ecological responsibility are part of the company profile. They also want to make this approach clear in the packaging of their products. Das grüne Etikett® now offers an environmentally friendly way of labelling.

Sustainable products should leave as little environmental impact as possible. From an ecological point of view, products have to balance themselves from the raw materials through production, delivery and use to misuse. What this means is that sustainable products should be of a high quality and should not pollute the environment as much as possible during production and disposal.

We only have one world that we must preserve for future generations!

We are not only able to produce in a climate-neutral way, we also ship our labels in a climate-neutral manner. With the GoGreen environmental protection program from DHL!

DHL GoGreen has set itself ambitious environmental goals. Priority was given to emission reduction measures. After all, DHL GoGreen wants to reduce greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions from its business to zero by 2050 and to achieve ambitious targets by 2025. Two strategic approaches are being pursued: less energy consumption (burn less) and the use of alternative energy sources (burn clean).

The Blue Angel is the German government's environmental label for the protection of people and the environment. It is sophisticated, independent and has been a compass for environmentally friendly products for more than 35 years.

The recycled material we use has already been awarded the Blue Angel - "Protecting the Resources" by the RAL gGmbH.

Climate change is omnipresent. Images and news of natural catastrophes attributed to the greenhouse effect and the ambitious targets set by the German government to reduce CO2 emissions are raising public awareness of climate change. The economic, social and ecological consequences of unbridled global warming pose high risks.

For this reason, environmentally friendly and resource-saving production is becoming increasingly important for business and industry. In addition, many customers in the printing industry have already made climate protection an important part of their corporate culture. They need reliable information on the CO2 emissions of their print jobs in order to include them in their carbon footprints.

The concrete implementation of the climate initiative in printing companies takes place in three steps:

Step 1 - Determine CO2
The associations have developed a CO2 calculator to show which emissions were generated by a print job. This is available to the participating companies for their own accounting. The prerequisite for access to the computer is participation in a training course, which explains the complex connections of the accounting as well as the individual calculation parameters.

Step 2 - Avoid CO2
All companies wishing to use the CO2 calculator within the framework of the climate model must declare their willingness to have their energy efficiency checked promptly in addition to the training measures. To this end, the associations provide a pool of advisors who have specialised in the specific needs of the industry. KfW subsidises the initial consultation with 80% of the costs.

Step 3 - Compensating CO2
Companies can compensate for the CO2 value of the print job either themselves or on behalf of their customers by purchasing certificates from climate protection projects for the CO2 emissions they cause. The certificates can be ordered directly via the CO2 calculator. Print products for which certificates have been purchased may be marked with the symbol "Print CO2 offset".

guiding principles
Many questions concerning climate change are still open and in some cases controversial. The printing and media associations attach great importance to communicating the topic of climate protection credibly and responsibly to customers both within the industry and externally. Commitment to climate protection is not a short-term marketing strategy, but rather requires long-term and consistent integration into one's own corporate philosophy. With the Climate Initiative, the associations want to support companies in implementing climate protection measures in a fair and cooperative manner. The balance parameters of the CO2 calculator have been carefully prepared and coordinated with science and politics. We attach particular importance to pointing out the limits of CO2 calculation and the interpretation of climate balances. Companies themselves or on behalf of their customers can offset the CO2 value of the print job in concrete climate protection projects.

climate protection projects
Our cooperation partner ARKTIK is a young, multi-award-winning climate protection company from Hamburg, recommended by leading climate experts. ARKTIK's climate protection projects, which are supported by the print and media associations as part of the climate initiative, are exclusively projects that comply with the "Gold Standard" developed by the WWF. The Gold Standard is the leading independent quality standard for climate protection projects. It is supported by more than 60 non-governmental organisations and is awarded only to projects that have been proven to reduce greenhouse gases and are good for the local environment and social concerns of the population. All ARKTIK climate protection projects are reviewed on site by a UN-approved body. The "Tested Emission Certificate Management" seal of approval in accordance with TÜV NORD TN-CC 002 additionally guarantees that ARKTIK always compensates 100% of the stated CO2 emissions. Together with ARKTIK, the Climate Initiative of the printing and media associations offers the following Gold Standard climate protection projects to offset CO2 emissions:

LifeStraw, water treatment, Kenya: The water filters ensure access to clean drinking water in the rural regions of Kenya and save more than two million tons of CO2 per year by eliminating the usual boiling of drinking water. In addition, the project creates thousands of jobs for the local population - we call it green development aid!

Wind energy, in Mut District, Turkey: In the north of Mut District, 11 wind turbines on Mount Magras produce clean wind power for approx. 50,000 local households and thus save approx. 70,000 tons of CO2 per year - this corresponds to the amount of CO2 that is generated on average by 25,000 cars in Germany per year.
Landfill gas in Ankara, Turkey: At the landfill site Mamak near Anakara, landfill gases are used to produce clean energy in an award-winning project promoted by the World Bank. This saves approx. 410,000 tons of CO2 every year.
